  21. </p>
  22. <p>     The U.S. Senate ousted the former federal judge last year
  23. following bribery allegations. He's now running for the
  24. Democratic nomination for Florida secretary of state,
  25. advocating casino gambling. His opponents: a newspaper
  26. columnist and a former Grand Dragon of the K.K.K.
  27. </p>
  28. <p>EVAN MECHAM
  29. </p>
  30. <p>     The former Arizona Governor embarrassed many constituents
  31. by rescinding a state holiday for Martin Luther King. Then, in
  32. 1988, he was impeached by the legislature for misuse of funds.
  33. He's dusted himself off and is a long shot for the Republican
  34. nomination for his old job.

  37. </p>
  38. <p>     The pugnacious president of Boston University was considered
  39. a political asterisk last January when he began his candidacy
  40. to succeed Governor Michael Dukakis. Despite a string of
  41. outrageous statements and an undisguised high opinion of
  42. himself, Silber stands a good chance to get the Democratic nod.

  45. </p>
  46. <p>     The ex-Klansman won a seat in the Louisiana legislature as
  47. a Republican and is running for the U.S. Senate; in spite of
  48. recent revelations that he once used a pseudonym to co-author
  49. a book that included explicit sexual techniques, he hopes to
  50. force a runoff with Democrat J. Bennett Johnston.

  52. <p>RON DANIELS
  53. </p>
  54. <p>     An assistant campaign manager for Jesse Jackson in 1988,
  55. he announced last week that he is "seriously exploring" his own
  56. independent run for President in 1992. Daniels advocates D.C.
  57. statehood, a slowdown in prison construction to boost social
  58. spending, and reparations to descendants of slaves.
